Another Pastoral Epistle

April 18, 2018

Hi EBC Family,

It has been said, “If you chase two rabbits, they will both escape.”  In other words, we can’t be running around chasing so many things that we come away with nothing.  What are we chasing?  Didn’t Jesus speak of trying to serve two masters?  And he said that you can’t do it.  It was impossible.  It would be like trying to run east and run west at the same time.  It can’t be done.

There are so many things, even good things, that can compete for our attention and focus.  As your pastor, I must keep coming back to my calling, my responsibilities, and to what it is that God wants me to do as your shepherd.  That means, there are things He doesn’t want me to do.  I am reminded of these words spoken of David, “And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them” (Psalm 78:72).  My desire is to lead God’s flock at EBC with integrity of heart and skillful hands.  I want to chase the things that are best for His bride, the church, and for advancing His kingdom.

One area for sharper focus has been in praying for our city and the Lakes Region.  I, along with Dave Provan, have been meeting with a few pastors on a weekly basis to pray for spiritual transformation in this area.  We are also praying about what more can be done to reach our city with the gospel.  As A.J Gordon put it, “You can do more than pray after you have prayed but you cannot do more than pray until you have prayed.”

My hope is that in the near future we will host a Prayer 30 to join with other churches to pray together for our city.  We got a taste of that this past Sunday night as several churches came together for worship and prayer.  What an uplifting, powerful night!

The main thing we are to chase is making disciples.  That is true in our EBC KIDS ministry, Momentum, TREC (basketball on Monday nights), On Goal Soccer Camp to take place the end of June, and in raising up others to serve and lead in our ministries.  In all that we do, it must support or advance that mission of making disciples.

What does a disciple look like?  It is a fully committed follower who in expression of his or her faith, actively participates in the community and ministry of EBC and in living out and sharing his/her faith.  The more this is true of attenders of EBC, the more we are carrying out our mission.  How are we doing?

I am encouraged to see the number of visitors to our church. The hard work is moving them along in the process of discipleship It is worth chasing all that is required to bring people to becoming fully committed followers of Christ!

Let’s be strong and courageous to live out the call of God on our lives!
