Another Pastoral Epistle 3/6/19

This is a reading from Tuesday’s 30 Day Prayer Challenge. Even if you have already read it, I encourage you to read it again and let it direct your prayers. Prayer is one of the more important things we are going to do around the Capital Campaign.

God and Prayer; a priority.
“You shall have no other gods before Me. Deuteronomy 5:7
“Here O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:4-5

Each of us can get wrapped up in the busyness of life, becoming distracted and misplacing priorities. We typically go to prayer as a last resort, especially in times of crisis, not seeking God first. We try to do things on our own, relying on our own wisdom, ideas and strength. However, when we prioritize prayer, we are prioritizing God Himself. This means placing God above anything and everything we do. Before we “do” anything, seeking God first in prayer and in reading His Word is where we will find God. Prayer is all about relationship. A relationship with our Heavenly Father. It is in this relationship where we find God’s power, strength and comfort.

Pray daily for help in prioritizing and devoting yourself to prayer and in reading the Bible. Seek forgiveness in relying upon your own wisdom rather than seeking Him first. Invite Him to talk with you as you wish to talk with Him.

Pray that you would not be distracted from praying daily for God’s work and will for both you and your church family.

Pray that you will discern more clearly God’s calling in your life each day and how to reorder our priorities to fulfill that calling.

Our main event is the What’s Next Banquet. Join us Friday, April 5th, at Pheasant Ridge Country Club at 6pm. RSVP by 3/20 either signing up at the back of the Sanctuary this Sunday or online below.

Did you know that the administration building had many of its windows replaced? Did you know that in our gym building there will soon be a new floor with fresh painted basketball lines and capability for volleyball? Soon we will have an open house for you to celebrate the work being done on our facility.

Did you know that the church voted to take out a loan in order to replace an aging heating system with HVAC? Not only will we enjoy monthly savings on our heating bill and have a heating system in place that is new and efficient, but we will appreciate that air conditioning in the worship center this summer.

Those are only a few of the projects that need to be addressed as we embark on this “What’s Next Campaign.” As I shared in the “What’s Next News” volume 3 (available this Sunday) we are to care for this space that God has given to us. Giving to the upgrade of our buildings and campus is to enable us to better facilitate ministry. Be sure to read the next newsletter to stay informed. Also, several teams will be doing home visits this coming month, so if you would like to receive a personal visit, then contact Bill Miller or the church office.

Sign up for the “What’s Next Banquet” will begin this Sunday. There will be a table in the back of the sanctuary for you to reserve your spot at the banquet or you can register online at our EBC web page. We are anticipating an excellent turnout to this banquet on April 5, so don’t delay in signing up.

The “30 day prayer challenge” begins on March 5. Turn in your commitment to pray cards by this Sunday to receive daily prayer guide or weekly printout of the guide. The success of this campaign depends on the prayer of God’s people!

Speaking of prayer, the prayer builders will meet this coming Sunday between services (10:20-10:40) in the room behind the stage. Portraits of Jesus Bible Study is at 9:00 and meets downstairs in the fellowship hall. This week’s topic is on Jesus the bread of life.

Have you been feasting on Jesus? Have you planned a time of fasting between now and Resurrection Sunday (4/21)? How will you use breaking from physical food to pray and meditate on the Word of God? I have set a date on my personal calendar to break away from my normal routine of work for prayer, reflection, meditation, and care of my own soul.

God is building something here at EBC! The attendance this past Sunday on a snowy day blew me away! You want to be with God’s people! You long for corporate worship! You desire to know Him better. May that spill out of your life this week until we meet again this Sunday!

Keep hearing the song of the redeemed,
Pastor Brian

Another Pastoral Epistle 2/13/19

I hope you are OK with my being proud as your pastor. I was proud of the work done by the Glo Team and other workers who put together a wonderful mission’s conference this past weekend. It was well done and I trust impactful for those who attended over the weekend and particularly this past Sunday. There was a great representation of both local and global outreach. As I said in my opening comments on Sunday, it was appropriate for us to break away from a typical Sunday to highlight one of our values as a church- outreach! It is not the only reason we exist as a church, but making disciples is our mission.

That is the “why” behind our “What’s Next Campaign.” So as to not get lost in buildings and funds, I remind you of what is driving us to do what we are doing in this campaign. It should have been obvious as we made our way through stewardship month in the book of Haggai that we are all being challenged on a corporate and personal level to replace our “not yet” mindset to “it is time.” In the upcoming “What’s Next” newsletter, I apply “it is time” filter through our 4-E ministry model as it relates to our capital campaign. “What’s Next News” will be available this Sunday. I hope you check it out.

This Sunday we will resume our sermon series on “Living in the Shadow of Hope,” from the book of Revelation. As we make our way from chapter 13 to chapter 22, the heartbeat of the book is to not live as if we don’t know how it will all end. These final 10 chapters carry a certain strangeness to them that stir our curiosities yet challenge us to live on purpose for we know the ending! Are you ready to dive back in?

Also, this Sunday the Bible study, “Portraits of Jesus” will meet at 9:00 am in the fellowship hall. This week’s study will focus on the characteristics of Jesus’ teaching and what sets Him apart from all other teachers.

Some final thoughts:

  • Consider how you might practice Biblical fasting between now and Resurrection Sunday (April 21). Fast from food in order to feast on God. Designate a period of time in which you will abstain from eating to focus on Jesus and His priorities. Skip a meal or two and let your hunger drive to hungering for His Word, meditating on Scripture, and communing with Him in prayer!
  • Revisit page 2 of your mission’s conference booklet. What is at least one way you will respond to the challenge from last Sunday?
  • Plan on attending the “What’s Next” banquet on Friday, April 5. There will be fun activities for the kids as well at the church while we all enjoy an evening at Pheasant Ridge Country Club.

Church, God is building something here at EBC! I urge you to continue to pray for our alignment with Him as we anticipate good and even unimaginable things from His hand in using us for greater impact in the region and beyond!

To His Glory,
Pastor Brian
