Another Pastoral Epistle 2/6/19

Inspire.  Enlighten.  Encourage.  Enlist!

That is our theme for our Missions’ Conference this weekend.  We hope that everyone will join us as we are inspired and enlightened by the local and global missionaries that we support.   On Sunday morning, there will be a variety of workshops to choose from as several of our global and local missionaries will be speaking.  You will want to check out the mission’s fair set up in the fellowship hall. There will be something for the children as well. Don’t forget that Sunday morning will begin at 9:30 in the sanctuary with worship.

This exciting weekend will kick-off with a prayer time on Friday night at 7:00 in the worship center.  A men’s breakfast will hear of the great things God is doing locally through the Love INC ministry. The breakfast begins at 8:00.  Women’s brunch will follow at 11:30 as the ladies will not only enjoy good food and fellowship but will hear from two of our missionaries.  Be in prayer that our hearts are stirred by this weekend and that even from this time God would raise up more workers for his harvest field in this region and beyond!

I want to keep in front of you the “what’s next campaign” in which we are being called as a church to ask God what’s next for EBC.  As we learned working through the book of Haggai it is time to commit to kingdom priorities and put to rest our “not yet” reasoning for not doing what God has called us to do.  Now, a part of that is related to our buildings and campus. It is time to address some facility needs to increase our efficiency and grow our effectiveness.  When God brought us to this campus, we knew there were projects left undone until a later time. That time has come. And as I have shared in the “what’s next” newsletter #1 it is all tied to our mission and objectives as a church.  I share more about that in newsletter #2. I hope you picked up a copy of newsletter #1. Newsletter #2 will be coming soon!

I hope you have marked down Friday, April 5 on your calendar.  April 5 is our what’s next banquet. More will be shared on that night of what we are asking God to do financially through His people.  We will notbe asking for any money on that night.  We will be asking that you seek God on what He wants you to do as we move forward as a church.

Portraits of Jesus study on Sunday mornings at 9:00 will not meet this Sunday but will pick it up again on Sunday, February 17. If you haven’t been able to make it yet, come to the study on February 17 as we will look at what it means that Jesus was called a “teacher” (over 30 times in the gospels).

I am looking forward to returning to our sermon series on “Living in the Shadow of Hope.”  We will be resuming our study in Revelation on February 17 as we will look at the tale of two beasts in chapter 13.

One last thought as I close.  Consider how you might practice Biblical fasting between now and Resurrection Sunday (April 21).  Fast from food in order to feast on God. Designate a period of time in which you will abstain from eating to focus on Jesus and His priorities.  Skip a meal or two and let your hunger drive to hungering for His Word, meditating on Scripture, and communing with Him in prayer!
See you soon!  Remain in Him, church!
Pastor Brian

Another Pastoral Epistle 1/30/19

There is so much to share with you about what is going on in the church. I will get to that, but my heart grieves. I am saddened over the most recent law passed in the state of New York that loosens (understatement) the laws on abortion. The “Reproductive Healthcare Act,” allows abortions for any reason up to 24 weeks, and up to birth to protect a woman’s life or health as determined by a healthcare professional. The law also allows non-doctors to perform the procedure. And the celebration that followed sickened me!

As I was doing some reading on this controversial law and what others had to say about it, I came across this very thought-provoking question, “If it’s wrong to hurt people because of skin color or gender, why is it okay to hurt them because they are smaller, less developed, or in a different location?” Excellent question! The article also asked, “Do you believe that each and every human being has an equal right to life, or do only some have it based on something none of us share equally?” These are logical questions. But then again, common sense isn’t very common. (See article, “All we did was survive” by Scott Klusendorf).

In previous epistles on two occasions I have spoken about the sanctity of human life. Let me repeat myself. Human life is a gift from God to be cherished from the time of conception until natural death. God is directly involved with human life at every age and affirms its value under all conditions. As followers of Christ, it is imperative for us to maintain this same high regard for life. We are to call society to embrace the value of human life and to affirm the dignity and worth of all. Society should guarantee the rights of the unborn child, the dignity of the elderly, and the care of the handicapped and where it does not, then it is our responsibility to foster a higher morality. We are to defend the defenseless and that includes the modern-day slavery of sex trafficking and to challenge the biases of our culture and the devaluing of life in all its forms.

In other words, all life is sacred for every single human being bears the image of God. So, we must be pro-life from the womb to the tomb. As followers of Christ, we don’t have to choose between speaking into moral behaviors and promoting the gospel. We can speak truthfully within the context of the redemptive power of the gospel. And as Peter reminds us in speaking of the reason for our hope that we must, “do so with gentleness and respect.”

Ok, let me highlight some key events on the church’s calendar. Mission’s conference is right around the corner. On Friday night, February 8, at 7:00 we will gather again for prayer. This time our focus will be on praying for our missionaries, local outreach, and the mission’s conference. Men, you are invited to the men’s breakfast on Saturday at 8:00, followed by a brunch for women at 11:30. Sunday will look different, but should be very impactful as we hear from various speakers, fellowship together, and check out displays at the mission’s fair. It all begins at 9:30 in the worship center. There is something for the kiddos as well!

Portraits of Jesus got off to an excellent start with Adam Hayes teaching on the reasonableness of our faith. This Sunday I will teach on what Jesus said about suffering. Is God the source of our suffering? In what way is Jesus the healer? Come this Sunday at 9:00 in the fellowship hall to explore these and other questions.

I am so looking forward to our “What’s Next Banquet” on Friday, April 5. Set that date aside. There will be some fun activities that evening for the kids as well as the adults come together around good food to learn more about what’s next for EBC.

Prayer builders will meet this Sunday at 10:20 in the room behind stage. I am sure there is plenty more I have forgotten, so check out announcements below.

With thanks to the Giver of Life,
Pastor Brian

Another Pastoral Epistle 1/23/19

So much of my week is centered on Sunday, I was confused all day as to the day of the week. I missed seeing you this week and being together as a church family. Hopefully, the cancellation doesn’t mess with your awareness of and attendance to some great opportunities for growth and togetherness.

This Sunday during the 9:00 am worship service we are offering an exciting Bible study called “The Portraits of Jesus.” It is an 8-week class exploring the presentations of Christian beliefs about Jesus. This Sunday will address the question, “How is it that the Christian faith is reasonable?” Even if you cannot make all 8 weeks, I would urge you to sit in on the study when you can. Over the 8 weeks, you will be taught by Adam Hayes, Matt Anderson, Jim Hayes, and me. Coffee will be on!

Also, this Sunday night from 6 pm-7 pm we will fellowship together around prayer and singing. I cannot state strongly enough the need for us to be in prayer for what’s next as a church. Our desire is for His agenda to be done. So, set aside 60 minutes this Sunday night to be with your brothers and sisters as we seek the Lord together!

Don’t forget that the Missions’ Conference is right around the corner. “Inspire, Enlighten, Encourage, and Enlist” Missions event is February 8th-10th. The weekend will kick-off with a prayer night on February 8th. There will be a men’s breakfast and women’s brunch on that Saturday, February 9th. And Sunday we will do things a little differently than usual as there will be several workshops to choose from and a Missions’ Fair. I am looking forward to this weekend!

Do you have Friday night, April 5th marked on your calendar? That is the “What’s Next Banquet” for the entire church. There will be a kid’s program as well. It will be a fun and informative night as we unite our heart and minds around what God is building here at EBC. It is time to take some faith steps toward greater growth and impact. Let’s see what God is going to do through us as a church in this next season. We are in this together!

Church, again, I remind you of the words of the Psalmist who declared, “Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet createdmay praise the Lord” (Psalm 102:18). Our investments are not only for what our eyes can see, but for generations to come.

To Him be the glory,
Pastor Brian

Another Pastoral Epistle 1/16/19

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21).  The Bible is not against making plans. It is wise to plan, but it is also wise to hold onto those plans loosely.  The Book of James speaks to submitting our plans to the Lord’s will or its Latin equivalent, “Deo Volente.” It is believed that back in church history the Methodists were known to sign all their letters with initials, D.V. (Deo Volente)- If the Lord wills.

With that in mind, plans are in place for upgrading and addressing some needs within our church campus.  As we have been learning in our study in Haggai, it is time to move to the second phase of our building plan as laid out back when we moved into this facility.  It is time to ask what it is that the Lord has for us next. “What’s Next” campaign is being rolled out and there is a very important date I want you to put on your calendar.  Friday night, April 5, there will be a “What’s Next Banquet. There will be a program for the kids as well. Watch for the details. For now, save the date.

I am appreciative of the prayer team that is formed around this campaign.  You will be hearing of the many ways you can be praying for our church as we move forward to embracing what God is building here.  I hope you will join with others for a night of fellowship around prayer. Sunday night, January 27 at 6:00 is an opportunity to worship and pray together as we ask God to continue to show us “What’s next” for EBC.

One answer to what’s next is to develop an even stronger teaching ministry here that addresses specific needs within our church family.  Join us for a Bible study beginning on Sunday mornings at 9:00 (during first service). Portraits of Jesus is an eight-week study on the person of Jesus given to us by the New Testament.  It will challenge the wrong perceptions of Jesus in our modern world. Jim Hayes, Matt Anderson, Adam Hayes and I will be sharing the teaching. It begins this Sunday, January 20 at 9:00 in the fellowship hall.

“Inspire. Enlighten. Encourage. Enlist.” Missions event on February 8-10.  The weekend will kick-off with a prayer night on February 8. There will be a men’s breakfast and women’s brunch on that Saturday, February 9.  And Sunday we will do things a little differently than usual. We will have one service at 9:30am and there will be several workshops to choose from and a Missions’ Fair. This is going to be an exciting weekend!

I trust that you are part of a community group.  This is more and more necessary as our church grows.  Relationships best happen in smaller groups, so sign up for a group if you aren’t part of one presently.

As you can see, a lot is going on at EBC.  My prayer is that we continue to grow deeper with Christ and each other and to have a greater impact on our community!  We build and invest now for what we cannot see. As the Psalmist declared, “Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the Lord” (Psalm 102:18).

See you soon,
Pastor Brian
D.V.
