The Weekly Epistle 9/18/19

Imagine that you are in a meeting at church when a poorly dressed man walks in who appears to be lost.  Someone in your group asks, “Can I help you?”  The man staring at the floor replies softly, “I am in need of some money to pay some past-due bills.”

One of the group members immediately walks over to the man and says, “I am sorry to hear that and I am sure we can help you.”

Someone else brings over a pastry and offers the man some coffee, while a third person pulls out some cash from his wallet to hand the man. Another group member speaks to the man about a ministry the church offers to help with budgeting and finances. Someone else jumps in to share how much God loves him and cares about his life.  And there is another group member who is organizing a plan to meet this need.  He directs one person to make a phone call to the one in charge of the benevolent fund, asks someone else to go and get a brochure of the church and takes down the man’s name and contact information to make sure someone will follow-up with him. One member around the table has been quiet through all this as she thinks about what has taken place in this man’s life that has led to this man’s situation.

These are spiritual gifts in action!  People with different gifts respond to the same event in different ways.  One response over another isn’t necessarily wrong; it is just different.  God has arranged the parts of the body, the church, just as he determined them to be.  And you are the body of Christ and members of it.  And as a part of the body of Christ, you have been given a gift to be used in the church in order for it to function properly.  Do you know your part?  Are you using your gift to strengthen the church?

One of our values as a church is having the right people in the right place of ministry.  The Network Seminar helps believers discover their spiritual gift, their passion, and the personality style that best fits with serving at EBC. Network is a 6-hour seminar that will take place at the church on Saturday November 2 and November 9 from 9:00 to noon.  The greatest aspect to the seminar is the one hour coaching each participant receives at another time after the completion of the seminar.  I would strongly encourage you to attend this seminar (sign-ups begin this Sunday).

Also, don’t forget about the Sunday School class on the book of James that begins this Sunday at 9:00 in room 102. Discovery class will run at the same time in the fellowship hall through the month of October.  I am also excited that as a church we will have a booth at the Laconia Pumpkin Fest on October 19.  We need people for set up and tear down and for face painting.  Also, we will be passing out bags of candy, so if you can supply some candy for that event that would be awesome.  Any candy left over will be used at the church’s trunk or treat.  Stop by at the ministry counter this Sunday if you can help in some way.

Check out the rest of the announcements below. There is a lot going on!

Blessings to you, Pastor Brian

Gym Floor Update

The concrete floor that was poured over the summer at the gym has been taking a very long time to dry. The moisture levels need to be at a specific % before the new floor can be placed. The good news is the moisture levels are coming down! They are not quite where they need to be, but we have progress! Please continue to pray.

The Weekly Epistle 9/11/19

Here is a brief update from the GLO Team on the recent missions trip to Honduras. We will have another update from the team that went coming soon, so stay tuned!

On July 20-July 29th Steve Forbes, Victoria and Ethan Brown partnered up with Rick and Ruth Odess from Missions Door to set out on a missions trip to Tocoa, Colon Honduras to help with a building project for Pastor Lucas Gomez. Pastor Lucas had been praying for three years for missionaries to come and God answered his prayer. We found out that we were the first missionaries to come to that church’s community. We all got a little sick because they did not know the process of properly cleaning food and dishes for our weak American stomachs, but that didn’t matter because we were just grateful to be visiting with our brothers and sisters in Christ. The money we sent down was used to purchase roofing materials for the new church building that the members of the church had built over a period of 9 months. We moved dirt for the floor while the welder put together the rafters and then we would help hoist them up into place.  In the afternoon’s VBS would be held with the kids from the community involving singing, games and crafts. We all had a great time and We are so thankful for this experience. Their faith and our faith grew stronger. It reset our perspectives on what matters in this world and what our mission to our community here and beyond is. Thank you all for your prayers, support and kind words. We had a wonderful time helping our brothers in sisters in Honduras and we know we will see them again one day.

The Weekly Epistle 9/4/19

If you were to die tonight and stand before God and He were to ask you, “Why should I let you into my heaven?”  What would you say?  That was the question my wife asked my aunt, who is battling cancer.

My aunt is one of the kindest people I have met. She has faced adversity throughout her life with strength and courage.  My aunt, with her alcoholic husband, raised her three kids to be polite, honest, and morally upright.  She is what I would call a good person!

That day, a week ago, in her living room, we had that awkward conversation about my doing her funeral when she does pass and what she wanted included in her service.  It is something I would rather not talk about, yet it is helpful to know her wishes and desires and to see her heart as she knows that day is likely very near.  My mind has since thought about what I will say about her.

It was Stephen Covey who is attributed with the obituary exercise of imaging your funeral and what you would want others to say that they miss about you and your positive attributes associated with you. How would you want others to describe you?

“Pastor, this is all kind of morbid!’  Perhaps!  Ok, it is! But if you have read this far, then you will see my point in this.  How you want to be remembered and what you hope others can honestly say about you is the legacy you will leave behind.  Beginning this Sunday, our sermon series in the book of Second Timothy will help us identify the legacy that we hope to leave.  The truth is that right now we are working on the legacy we are going to leave.  I am excited about the time we will spend each Sunday and in our community groups on “Living A Life That Lasts.”

I trust that you have signed up for a community group.  If not, you can sign up this Sunday.  Don’t forget that this Sunday is also the church picnic that is at Opechee point immediately following the second service.  Bring your lunch to the park as we fellowship together, join in some outdoor games, and witness several people get baptized!

Later this month (9/22), the study in the book of James will begin on Sunday mornings at 9:00 in room 102.  There is a Welcome Luncheon that day for all who started attending EBC within the last year.  Our four-week discovery class will begin on 10/6 and is for all who want to learn more about who we are as a church or interested in becoming a member. As you can see, there is a lot happening in this month and the months to come, so stay informed as we work to keep you informed.

In all we do, our hope is to leave a mark on this community and beyond.  What will EBC be remembered for?

Oh!  How did my aunt answer that question?  Let’s say this, I am more confident having left her that day than when I entered that her trust is in Jesus Christ as her Savior!

Looking to make a difference, Pastor Brian

The Weekly Epistle 8/28/19

Churches can run without prayer.  Marriages can run without prayer.  Organizations, parachurch ministries, and religious activities can run without prayer.  But we must ask, “Is what we are doing worth doing if we can do it without prayer?” A. J. Gordon put it this way, “You can do more than pray, after you have prayed, but you can never do more than pray, until you have prayed.”  Let that sink in.

At EBC there are people who faithfully and earnestly pray for the team of elders, the ministries of the church, and the needs among the EBC family.  There is a core group that faithfully meets between services the first Sunday of the month to pray for the church, the worship services, and the community. Prayer builders is open to all.  Join us this Sunday in the room behind the stage. Did you know that there are several pastors and leaders who meet each Tuesday from noon to 12:30 to pray for our city and the Lakes region?  I would encourage you to set aside a few minutes up to half hour on Tuesdays to pray wherever you are for our city.

This Sunday there will be a community-wide prayer gathering at Laconia High School front lawn at 1:00 to pray for the local schools, staff, students, our city, and public servants.  This is open to the churches in this area.  Will you consider attending this event?

One aspect of our community groups is prayer. Each week throughout homes from Gilford to Gilmanton over 125 people meet for fellowship, study of God’s Word, and prayer.  Have you joined a community group?  You can sign up by contacting Tim Whitman or the church office, or you can sign up at the kiosk in the back of the worship center this Sunday or next Sunday, September 8.

I hope you are planning on attending our church picnic on Sunday, September 8.  After the second service, pick up a sandwich and head over to Opechee Point. There are 6 people planning on being baptized.

There is a lot coming up in the next few months- Discovery class, Bible study in the book of James, Welcome Luncheon, network spiritual gifts seminar, ministry fair, and our new sermon series in the book of 2 Timothy will begin on September 8.  We will also look to have greater impact on our community through hosting a booth at Laconia’s Pumpkin Fest and our annual Trunk or Treat in the church parking lot.  You will want to pay attention as more information comes your way on these happenings as a church.

But I end with where I began.  We can run without prayer, but if God isn’t in it, it isn’t worth it.   Without Christ we can do nothing.  God’s work in us is to drive us to deeper dependency on Him. It is astounding that God invites us in prayer to draw upon His inexhaustible grace.  It is His means of grace to grow us and a point of contact we have to fellowship with the personal God.  Prayer is a continuation of a conversation God has started through His Word. It is the best conversation we can have!

Blessings to you, Pastor Brian

The Weekly Epistle 8/21/19

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.”  Years ago, I was asked to lead a dedication service for a farmer in the church who owned his own produce farm.  I read these verses from Habakkuk 3.  It seemed rather odd that I would begin the time of dedication with words about a lack of production when committing this family farm business to the Lord.  But it spoke volumes of my confidence in this family’s trust in God.

Isn’t our entire walk with God about trust? Certainly, trusting God when life is going well requires little of us.  But what if we personalized those words from Habakkuk?
  Though I feel all alone and I can find no satisfaction in the things of this world;
  though I find no comfort for my pain and struggle to make ends meet;
though I face troubles in my job and family and my sense of security is threatened,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to go on the heights.

Those words are similar to what Job embraced when he said, “He gives and takes away but may the name of the Lord be praised.” In what area of your life is there a need for a shift from doubt to confidence, from worry to worship, and a fresh cry for intimacy with Christ?  As we are learning from our study in the life of Moses, God is taking us somewhere. Whatever season and stage we are in, through it all God is faithful and moving to accomplish His work in us and in the world.

At first pass, it might have been challenging to see what God was doing in the neighborhood block party as very few people showed up.  But what a beautiful thing to see the church family serve together and get excited about meeting our neighbors.  A contact was made with one couple with hopes that we can build on that initial meeting. I am thankful for the many hands that went into that event and for the heart I saw for our community.

Soon the gym floor will be ready for the Monday night basketball.  Also, the TREC ministry is looking to start up volleyball in the gym, as well, since a part of this renovation included the capability for a volleyball net.  People are needed for effective outreach through the gym ministry.  See Justin Whitman or Dave Provan if interested.

Don’t forget about the church picnic and baptism on September 8.  If you would like to be baptized, then attend the baptism class this Sunday @ 9:00 in room 102 or contact the church office.  Signups for community groups begins this Sunday, so get connected with others by attending one of our community groups that meets throughout the week.  On September 22, “A Faith that Works” Bible study on the book of James will begin on Sunday mornings @ 9:00.  This study is a continuation of a Sunday School ministry we have begun at EBC. The hope is for other Bible study electives to be offered in the future as this ministry grows.

Blessings to you, Pastor Brian
