Advent Week One: Hope

Today is the first Sunday of the season of Advent. Our word advent is based on an ancient Latin word which means the arrival of a notable person or thing. As we gather over the next four Sundays we will celebrate the emanate arrival of the most notable person to ever enter the world, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the most notable because he is Immanuel, which means, God with us. In the person of Jesus God took on flesh and entered into the world so we could each know and experience relationship with him.

Although Jesus entered this world as a baby he did not come empty handed. He brought with him a hope, a peace, a joy and a love the world had never known. It is that hope, that peace, that joy, and that love that we celebrate with the lighting of each of these four candles. Today we light the first candle as we celebrate the advent of Jesus’ hope.
