The Weekly Epistle 1/22/20

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.  Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”  The origin of this quote is unknown.  What I like about these words is that it speaks to the importance of discipleship and mentoring.  It addresses the need to assist others in a way that goes beyond meeting a physical need to helping others become self-sufficient.

My desire for EBC is that we are a church that makes disciples.  But even beyond that, to make disciples who make disciples who make disciples- you get the point.  Our task is not to simply help people out of their predicament but equip them to discover God’s solution for themselves.

I am encouraged by several in the church, men and women, who are mentoring others.  This is not something that is broadcasted publicly, but it is happening.  If you are interested in being mentored or mentoring someone else, you can talk with me or one of the elders or Anna or anyone in women’s ministry.

You know the shoes that we are collecting for Haiti?  This is all about teaching others to fish.  Did you read the insert this past Sunday?  The goal is 5,000 pairs of shoes to help Haiti which has launched a training program teaching women to become entrepreneurs.  Help for Haiti will deliver your contributed shoes to women starting small business in northern Haiti. They sell the shoes and use the funds to launch small businesses of their own. Your used shoes make it possible for them to fund their new business and transform the lives of their families!  So, drop off your shoes in the box at the back of the church.

Men, don’t forget about the men’s breakfast this Saturday at 7:00.  The signup helped for planning, but there is still room for you if you didn’t sign up.

“Created for Connection” is the theme of the marriage conference we will be hosting on April 3 & 4.  It will be $20 a couple, but financial assistance is available.  Don’t let the cost get in the way of your attending this event.

Mark your calendars for two prayer events coming up: Sunday, February 16 is “Prayer 30” from 12:15-12:45.  Also, “Fellowship of Prayer” is scheduled for Sunday, March 15.

In two weeks, there will be a four-week study on “Wisdom and the Will of God.”  It will begin on 2/2 @ 9:00 on Sunday mornings.  Adjust your schedule to attend this Sunday School class on the book of Proverbs.

Look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday!  Blessings, Pastor Brian
