The Weekly Epistle 2/12/20

“Momentum Student Ministries exists to glorify God by helping teens thrive as authentic mature disciples of Jesus Christ.”

Some may read a statement like that and ask, “Can teenagers really thrive as disciples? Can they fully follow and devote themselves to the teachings and practices of another?” The answer is an unequivocal, yes. In fact, all teenagers are disciples. The question is, what and who are they are disciples of?

Teenagers are in a constant state of development; that is why the Bible exhorts us to train up a child in the way they should go (Proverbs 6:22). But what happens when we abdicate that responsibility?

If we fail to engage our teenagers in the truth of God’s Word, their iPhone will engage them in a world of lies.

If we fail to disciple the next generation, Billie Eilish and Justin Bieber will do it for us, and when they graduate and head off to college, their humanistic professor will take over from there.

Teenagers are impressionable, and if we’re not intentional about making an impression upon them, then someone else will. This is why Momentum Student Ministries is committed to impressing upon them, “the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6), the knowledge that will light their way and lead them from the kingdom of this world into the Kingdom of Heaven.

But knowledge is just one part of the equation. As Pastor Brian showed us in his recent sermon series, Legacy: Living a Life that Lasts, knowledge of our faith must be transferred by the faithful example and guidance of those who have gone before. Kids don’t just need knowledge; they need someone to guide them in that knowledge, someone to disciple them.

Back in November, I shared with you that that Momentum was going on a hiatus into the new year. I shared that over the past six years, we have had a great team of volunteers who have served the youth of EBC faithfully from week-to-week, but many of those leaders had moved into new seasons of life and ministry.

Today I am excited to announce, Tyler Mansfield, Ethan and Victoria Brown, Scott, Cindy, and Dylan Treamer have all stepped up to be a part of the all-new Momentum Ministry Team.

It is my hope and prayer that God will use each of them in significant ways to disciple the next generation. Please join me in that prayer.

Momentum activities will be resuming soon. I will share an update on that next week.

Blessings,

Pastor Dan
